Santa Clara County leaders will host a ceremonial opening for the new Evening Reporting Center -- an alternative to juvenile hall for delinquent youth -- at a 1 p.m. event Wednesday.
Designed to avoid unnecessary incarceration, the reporting center located at 1560 Berger Drive in San Jose will serve approximately 200 teens per year, at a fraction of the cost of juvenile hall. Those who are eligible for the 30-day program operating between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. have violated probation or committed minor crimes such as petty theft or drug use.
Santa Clara County joins San Francisco and Santa Cruz in offering a short-term, intensive treatment alternative to the juvenile hall. The center, which began accepting a limited number of juveniles on Sept. 11, will soon serve 24 teens at a time, ages 14 to 17.
Staff from two community groups, the Alum Rock Counseling Center and Fresh Lifelines for Youth, will provide programs that stress better decision-making and accountability. Participants will also get legal education, art classes and help with homework and meal preparation.
