CJCJ and MILPA are pleased to open applications for our fifth annual Next Generation Fellowship!

The Next Generation Fellowship (NGF) is a leadership development and policy advocacy training for formerly incarcerated or justice-involved emerging leaders from across California. It supports emerging leaders in 1) Advancing racial justice and cultural healing, and 2) Influencing state and local government through policy advocacy. This fellowship focuses on ending mass incarceration by promoting healthy, safe and supportive communities.

Simply put, this Fellowship changed my life. It empowered me to see my lived experience as my power and expertise in the movement. The lessons gained were invaluable! I’m leaving with a toolbox filled with cultural healing and wellness, as well guides to the legislative and state budget process. I’m thankful for the guest speakers, facilitators, and above all, for my cohort.” — NGF Fellow

Fellows will leverage their personal and professional experiences to drive transformative change in the justice system. Over three 2‑day virtual sessions, coupled with supplementary engagement opportunities, participants will take part in culturally-relevant dialogues and activities. These will foster effective storytelling, civic participation, and strategic advocacy. Through NGF, fellows will recognize their lived experience as a form of expertise that can influence policy-making and strengthen justice reform. NGF brings together a community of advocates and mentors to support fellows and facilitate future leadership opportunities.

CJCJ and MILPA (Motivating Individual Leadership for Public Advancement) co-facilitate the fellowship. Together we meet the diverse needs of formerly incarcerated and justice-involved individuals by creating a unique leadership pathway in the movement to end mass incarceration. NGF prioritizes racial equity, cultural healing, and building the people power necessary to end the carceral system’s harm.

The time and space created for relationship-building made this fellowship unique. To see everyone’s final presentation was motivating and made me grateful to have participated in this fellowship with brilliant people.” — NGF Fellow
