This week, the Board of State and Community Corrections (BSCC) published a list of California city and county departments that have submitted notices stating an intention to apply for Prop 47 funding. Prop 47 grants include an estimated $103 million to fund community programs that focus on mental health, drug treatment and criminal justice diversion programs. In addition to the public agencies listed, there may be additional city and county city departments that will apply for Prop 47 funding by the due date, February 21.
Under Prop 47, public agencies — defined as county, city, or tribal government departments – must be the lead applicants to apply for this funding, but they are required to share at least 50 percent of awarded funding with a nonprofit partner. These grants will strengthen and increase community-based options for people struggling with mental health, substance use or other issues that incarceration has failed to address.
