32,351 Americans died from gunfire in 2011, bringing the gun toll over the last 25 years to 823,000 — equivalent to the entire population of San Francisco. The largest category of gun deaths is not mass shootings, school shootings, or dark-skinned youth in the street (which, put together, account for fewer than 10 percent of all gun deaths). It’s middle-aged white men shooting themselves (more than 90 percent of suicides/​accident victims aged 40 and above were white men).
